A MESSAGE FROM LOVEDEN DEANERY REGARDING THE CORONA VIRUS OUTBREAK - March 2020

Hello Everyone, I hope you are all safe and well. I have been asked to send out an email, although you may already be aware, of the latest guidance with regards to the Church and the Coronavirus Pandemic. We have been advised that, in light of the Government guidance around non-essential contact, the Archbishops of Canterbury and York have issued advice that public worship is suspended until further notice:- 'Churches should be open where possible but with no public worship services taking place. Prayers can be said by clergy and ministers on behalf of everyone and churches should consider ways of sharing this with the wider community.' There is further information and FAQ’s on the Church of England Website, I would urge everyone to familiarise themselves with the guidance and suggestions. For ease, here is the link:- https://www.churchofengland.org/more/media-centre/coronavirus-covid-19-guidance-churches We have raised the question reading of Banns of Marriage to the diocesan registry for advice and are waiting for a response, I will forward this information once received. I am also about to contact all those couples who have weddings booked with us advising them of the situation, which is:- For couples getting married, weddings services can take place but subject to the rules and guidance on social distancing. Any wedding in a church would need to be on a very small scale. Only five people need to be present at a marriage service: the couple and the clergyperson, plus two witnesses. There may be some cancellations and postponements - again I will keep you advised of any changes. We are waiting for futher guidance with regrds to Baptisms. In the light of the Prime Minister’s announcement about the need for social distancing measures to be put in place, all APCM's will be cancelled and parishes will be unable to hold their annual meetings (including elections) in the usual way. The National Legal Office has written to every Diocesan Registrar and Diocesan Secretary with advice on how to suspend the legal requirements to hold these meetings, I will let everyone know the outcome of this advice, once we have had sight of it. In light of this particular regard, if anybody was planning on standing down at the APCM, this year, would you consider, staying on until we are able to hold the APCM Meetings? Please let me know if this is not going to be possible. If you have any queries, that are not answered within the FAQ’s, do please get in touch. I think that's everything but please do let me know if you think I have missed something. Take care everyone & very best wishes Davina Davina Tyler Deanery Administrator Loveden Deanery

a snippet from history..........

Blessed THOMAS PLUMTREE, Rector of Stubton (c1560)

Blessed Thomas Plumtree - Martyr

BORN in the Diocese of Lincoln, a scholar of Corpus Christi College, Oxford, in 1546, he was made Rector of Stubton in his native county of Lincolnshire.

He resigned his benefice on the change of religion under Queen Elizabeth, and became a schoolmaster at Lincoln, but was obliged to resign the post on account of his faith.

However, it is as chief chaplain and priest of the 'Army of the Northern Rising' (1569) that he won the martyr's palm. 'His voice seems to have been like the Baptist's and to have stirred high and low alike'. His call to abandon heresy and to rally to the standard of the faith ran through the northern counties, and hundreds came in response to his summons.

He appears to have been celebrant of the Mass in Durham Cathedral immediately preceding F. Holmes' sermon, and the public Absolution which followed.

Upon his capture, after the failure of 'the Rising', he was singled out as a notable example of the priests who had officiated.

In the market-place at Durham he was offered his life, if he would embrace heresy, but he refused, and was hanged on the gibbet, drawn and quartered on 4th February 1570, and was buried in the market-place.
